Abstract

The scholars of the Hilla Hawza were not only known in cultural circles and academic assemblies as jurists, but each possessed an encyclopedic mind. Their gatherings were rich with debates of all kinds, yet most of what transpired in their meetings and study circles was not recorded. Grammar is essential for students of religious sciences to master in order to understand Quranic texts, prophetic traditions, and narratives from the Imams of the House of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them). Grammar is a branch of language studied to acquire Islamic sciences. Religious studies in Hilla reached their zenith, particularly during the period between the era of Ibn Idris al-Hilli (d. 1201 CE) and the era of Al-Allama al-Hilli (d. 1325 CE), accompanied by a flourishing of linguistic sciences, including grammar. In this research—which encompasses five topics—we aim to shed light on examples of these issues at times in exegesis books, at other times in their juristic works, and at times in books of various other knowledge.
